How Industries Evolve and where’s Information Security at the moment?

Being part of the Information Security industry these days means we’re getting to see a lot of great solutions — big impact and results for customers.

And as I reflect on the reasons why, it’s easy to see patterns.

./Patterns

Let’s take a step back — for decades in modern society (we could extrapolate this further in the past, but i’ll keep it short) different industries have evolved in a similar pattern, one that starts out fuzzy, disorganised into something more uniform across the whole of industry, it’s just good (some would say “best”) practice to optimize and organize around the desired solution outcome.

Lot’s of words… essentially, industries have followed a “maturity” pattern:

1. Initial fragmentation

2. Standardisation pressure

3. Industry cooperation

4. Universal adoption

Graphically, this could be represented as such:

General Industry maturity over time

Diving a little deeper into each phase:

1. Initial fragmentation
